Health Food alternatives?

I sure need to economize. Just can't cut out my eating out habit. You're welcome..;) So, during cold and flu season I lean towards the healthier food items on the menu LOL.. well as far as I can lean that is.

Butternut squash soup at Hot Rod Cafe. Okay, you meat and potatoes guys, yes they've got all those big fat burgers, but a break in the routine with this healthy treat is worth it. OMG Carrot Cake at Bistro on Spruce. Fresh, walnuts, moist raisins and a unique texture and flavor. Anthony's side dishes, garlic mashed potatoes (that's a vegetable!) and sauted vegetables are a taste bud party on their own.

Seriously, for the most organic items on the menu, it's likely Angelo's. Low cal, not likely but certainly good for what ails you food. Or Pilgrims deli. Selection just keeps getting better and better as they expand. And, they've got all the foods and vitamins to build the 'ole immune system right on site.

Take It Away!

Snow, pot holes, shovel, shovel, shovel. No time to cook but drive thru's are not an option. Curbside Take-Away! That's it. Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, Papa Murphy's, Red Robin all have them. But here's a list of this Dining Diva's frequented establishments that I wish had them. If you drop in, mention that to the manager eh?
Thai Bamboo
Caruso's Deli
Moon Time
Iron Horse
O'Shays (of course they have a monster-sized parking lot)
Sargent's

Any other suggestions?

Be sure to check first on days and hours specials apply, that can be tricky. The service, food quality and price make it well worth the effort. Not to mention, there's always a great view!

Out of the Ordinary

(Pictured) quail small plate from Beverly's at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.
One of the great things about the Coeur d'Alene area dining scene is the ability to find everything from soup to nuts and casual to 5-star cuisine. At Beverly's try the Bison Carpaccio with white truffle oil, horseradish cloud, garlic-Dijon aioli & caper popcorn.
Or hand-tossed pizza at Ciao Mambo ... maybe a Caterpillar Roll, with freshwater eel, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, tobiko and sweet eel sauce at Fisherman's Market. Whatever you're craving, we're sure you can find it at one of our local eateries!

Bite into a Burger

Burgers are a staple, a food group all their own. In North Idaho we have some old and new favorites to choose from. One of the newer entries in the burger sweepstakes are the Longboard Burgers (shown). A little burger joint tucked inside the A & D mini mart at 4th and Appleway it's fast becoming a local favorite. Then there's the oldest continuously operating business in all of Coeur d'Alene ... Hudson's Hamburgers downtown lunch counter. For over a hundred years members of the Hudson family have grilled up no frills burgers for locals and tourists alike. Here's a tip: don't ask for fries. :) Up on Government Way across from the Kootenai County Fairgrounds you'll find Nosworthy's. Bring a big appetite for one of their several varieties of burgers, bonus points if you like a little sports and beer with your burger. On Hwy. 53 in Rathdrum the aptly named Burger Heaven serves the best burger this side of the Pearly Gates. Long a local treasure, they're willing to share. Give it a try. Let us know if you have a favorite North Idaho burger joint!

Corner Donut Shop

The culture of the coffee shop is alive and well in Coeur d'Alene. Davis Donuts (often remembered as the one with the notable-quotable sign board on the front of their building) at 4th St. and Best Ave., is a slice of Americana served with a maple bar and cup of coffee. The regulars, the church crowd, the "to go please, I'm still in my jammies" and the booth renters breezed through more than a few baker's dozens last Sunday morning. All of the favorite, fresh baked daily, donuts are there. Don't look for fancy french pastries or a latte machine. Cold milk with a straw in the carton, a glazed old fashioned and some local banter about the economy is a comforting reality check in the midst of uncertain times, and a great escape from oatmeal!

Our Favorite Desserts

Poached Fig Tart at Bistro on Spruce

I save dessert calories for something special and my tastes are eclectic ... s’mores over a campfire to frozen chocolate covered bananas and poached fig tarts. At Bistro on Spruce the dessert is created from poached figs and mascarpone cheese in a short-dough crust, topped with Port reduction, vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. A unique combination of flavors and 5-star presentation tops off a fabulous meal. ~ Kerri

Butterscotch at Zip’s, Paul Bunyan and Dockside

Formative working years at Baskin Robbins create diehard ice cream fans. Recently, it’s butterscotch sundaes. Sorry BR, caramel just doesn’t cut it. For hard ice cream, it’s Paul Bunyan, softserve...Zips. For a formal dessert, it’s the huge ButterFinger Sundae at Dockside (bring three friends!) ~ Kiki

Mile High Mud Pie at Hot Rod Cafe

With coffee ice cream, Oreo crumbs, drizzled chocolate, whipped cream and toasted almonds... and standing nearly a mile high... this dessert is a feast all its own for my entire family of five. If you’re celebrating your birthday, it’s on the house and served with a festive sparkler. ~ Stephanie
